Zach Johnson has suddenly emerged as an unlikely contender after a magical third round at the 2025 Masters and had folks in the gallery at Augusta National Golf Club and fans watching on television thinking back to nearly 20 years ago when he won the green jacket at this tournament.
Johnson, 49, barely made the cut for the weekend and entered Saturday’s round at with a score of +2 after shooting even par on Thursday and finishing with a 74 during Friday’s second round. But he made a charge up the leaderboard on moving day at the Masters, particularly during his back nine when he pushed into the top 10. Johnson only qualified for this year’s event by virtue of his lifetime exemption for winning the Masters in 2007.

Johnson’s iron play grabbed the spotlight from there, despite playing alongside Jon Rahm in his pairing. Johnson gave himself short birdie putts on No. 12 and No. 13, and then again on No. 15 and No. 16 to move to 7-under for the round.
