DJ LeMahieu resumed his rehab assignment Friday night with Double-A Somerset, going 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout over seven innings at second base.
Initially slated to play third base, the change in plans to play second likely reflects the Yankees’ need to fill the void left by Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was placed on the injured list with a right oblique strain and is expected to miss four to six weeks.
LeMahieu’s return follows a brief pause in his rehab earlier in the week due to a cortisone injection in his right hip. The Yankees said it was a precautionary measure unrelated to his initial calf injury. Prior to the pause, he was 6-for-10 with a home run and three RBIs over four starts at second base.
Manager Aaron Boone emphasized the importance of a cautious approach to LeMahieu’s recovery, aiming for a build-up like a spring training period to ensure he is ready to return at full speed. With Chisholm’s injury creating a void in the infield, LeMahieu’s versatility and experience could provide much-needed stability. They could also use a steady right-handed bat.
Since signing his six-year, $90 million deal in 2021, DJ LeMahieu’s Yankees tenure has been marked by injuries and inconsistency. The three-time All-Star and two-time batting champion flashed his trademark discipline and glove work, but the power and production have faded. A foot fracture limited him to just 67 games in 2024, and he hit only .204. Still, the Yankees value his experience and versatility when healthy.
