New York Yankees fans spent the last two years patiently waiting for young shortstop Anthony Volpe to find some level of consistency.
Only a month into Volpe’s third season, it appears the fanbase finally reached its breaking point.
Volpe enters Saturday hitting .202 with a .696 OPS for the first-place Yankees. However, the Yankees are 9-9 over their last 18 games, with Volpe tallying a .148 average with no home runs, three RBI, and a .471 OPS in that stretch.
Manager Aaron Boone told reporters before Friday’s stunning loss to the Toronto Blue Jays that he still believes in Volpe. Social media users clearly don’t feel the same way.
“Is Anthony Volpe a bottom 5 shortstop?” one X (formerly Twitter) poster asked Friday night.
“I know he’s young, but when do we start having an Anthony Volpe convo?” another questioned. “The awful bat is getting too much [to] ignore.”
Baseball Prospectus and Major League Baseball ranked Volpe a top-7 prospect entering 2023. Baseball America listed Volpe at No. 10 in 2022 and No. 14 in 2023 ahead of his MLB debut.
The results have been mixed thus far. Although Vope tallied 6.7 bWAR, 33 home runs, and 52 stolen bases over his first two seasons, his .228 average and .661 OPS left plenty to be desired.
“[Someone] needs to sit him down and say look dude you’re not a power hitter – what kind of idiot has speed and doesn’t use it ever!?” an X user vented. “[Imagine] the power at the top and if the bottom could just be pesky slap/speed.”
Seems like everytime Anthony Volpe swings the bat, the bat goes farther than the ball

Volpe hit .286 with a home run, six RBI, five stolen bases, and a .815 OPS in 14 playoff games, results that haven’t carried over to the new season.
“Dude was so overhyped,” read one post. “They made us think he was the second coming [of] Derek Jeter.”
One Yankees fan went so far as to compare Volpe to Joey Gallo. Ouch.
“His stupid [expletive] face is a constant reminder of the incompetence and sheer stubbornness of this organization,” another commenter wrote. “I HATE THIS FRONT OFFICE.”
