AUGUSTA, Ga. – Caddie Joe Greiner will be working the 2025 Masters after all this week.
Greiner, who split with longtime boss Max Homa before last week’s Valero Texas Open, is subbing on the bag for two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas, replacing Matt Minister, who is nursing a sore back.
“Unfortunately, my caddie Rev hurt his back this week and isn’t able to be on the bag with me this week at Augusta,” Thomas wrote on his Instagram story Tuesday night. “Rev is resting up son he gets better soon. I’m very lucky Joe Greiner is a great friend and able to help me out last minute.”
Thomas parted way with Jim “Bones” Mackay, who returned to work for NBC/Golf Channel, and Minister took over last year at the 2024 Masters.
Homa and Greiner won six times on the PGA Tour since 2019. On Tuesday, Homa shared that Greiner made the decision to end their player-caddie partnership.
“It was not my choice so it sucked, but we always had a deal that we’re friends first and friendship mattered more than the work thing, and he was wise enough to do what he did,” Homa said. “It’s hard. I’m just so used to him caddying. And even just on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesdays, you just have this easy rhythm.
“But I was happy that he did it, because I would rather, you know, at the end of my days we continue to be great friends than one of us resent the other for how hard this game can be on a relationship. So it sucks because I just pictured always walking fairways with Joe. But again, that’s not, that was not the deal. I would rather walk life with Joe forever than this dumb game. So it’s been hard to process, but also good in a way, because friendship does matter more than any of this stuff.”
Thomas, 31, enters this week as No. 8 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He is a 15-time Tour winner but is winless since the 2022 PGA Championship.
