While Wisconsin remade its defensive front seven during the winter transfer window, including commitments from four accomplished defensive tackles, the program does not appear finished addressing that part of the roster.
The Badgers were listed among several programs in contact with Grand Valley State transfer defensive lineman Josh Schell. 247Sports’ Allen Trieu reported the interest, a group that includes Wisconsin, Kansas, Iowa, Syracuse and SMU. He also noted that the defensive lineman has a visit scheduled to Washington State.
Schell entered the portal this week after three years at Grand Valley State. He originally joined the program as a two-star recruit, ranked as the No. 398 defensive lineman in the class of 2022. Schell redshirted in 2022 before entering the team’s defensive line rotation in 2023, totaling 11 tackles and a pass deflection. His breakout campaign came in 2024 as a redshirt sophomore: 35 tackles, three for loss, two sacks, six pass deflections and a forced fumble.
The 6-foot-5, 275-pound defensive lineman is in the portal with two years of eligibility remaining.

Wisconsin is currently set to enter 2025 with transfers Corey Walker (Western Michigan), Parker Petersen (Tulane) and Jay’Viar Suggs (LSU), and returning senior Ben Barten, starting along the defensive line. Others in the projected rotation include transfer Charles Perkins (UT-Martin), sophomore Dillan Johnson, senior Brandon Lane and redshirt sophomore Jamel Howard.
The program has ties to Schell — outside linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Matt Mitchell was the head coach at Grand Valley State from 2010-22. Before joining the Badgers in 2023, Mitchell led the program when the defensive lineman was a true freshman in 2022.
While the defensive line room is far below Wisconsin’s top spring window priorities of left tackle and tight end, the Badgers appear interested in adding further depth at the position.
