INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts have two quarterbacks ready to compete for a starting spot, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t looking into adding more.
Indianapolis is hosting Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers on a top-30 visit to the team facility Wednesday, NFL Network reported.
Ewers is considered a Day 2 prospect by most mock drafts, often slotting into the third round. He falls into a gray area between potential starters and high-end backups.
Ewers broke out in his first season starting in 2023 by throwing 22 touchdowns to six interceptions to lead Texas to the College Football Playoff. Last season, he again led the Longhorns to the playoff and improved on the volume with 31 touchdowns but also threw 12 interceptions and saw his completion percentage drop from 69% in 2023 to 65.8% last season.
Insider: Why the Colts changed how they were developing Anthony Richardson by bringing in competition
“Ewers’ arm talent and game flashes are enticing, but he hasn’t learned to play the game with a high enough level of consistency,” NFL.com’s Lance Zeirlein wrote in his scouting report on Ewers.
“… Ewers rarely operates as a smooth, full-field reader. He often predetermines his target and throws into coverage instead of taking what the defense is offering. A lack of escapability will require him to process quickly enough to stay ahead of NFL blitz packages.
“The raw talent and upside will be alluring for pro-style passing attacks, but it’s fair to wonder if he will ever be able to rise above the talent on his roster and the ability of his play-caller to create favorable terms.”
History lesson: What positions has Colts GM Chris Ballard been successful drafting? And where has he failed?
At 6 foot 2 and 214 pounds and with negative career rushing yards, Ewers does not fit the prototype of quarterback the Colts have gone after for Shane Steichen’s offense recently. Indianapolis signed Daniel Jones to compete with Anthony Richardson and to provide the offense with two quarterbacks who can keep the scheme consistent with the threat of the quarterback run.
The Colts also don’t tend to have lots of contact with the prospects they draft after the combine, as they use their top-30 visits for a variety of reasons.
Chris Ballard: If there’s a QB in draft Colts believe in, ‘you pull the trigger’
Indianapolis does need a third quarterback after watching Sam Ehlinger leave to join the Broncos this offseason. That third quarterback could also develop into a backup or potentially a competitor to start next season with Jones on a one-year deal.
Ewers is one of a number of options for that type of player in this year’s draft along with Ohio State’s Will Howard, Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard and others.
