Spring vacation week brought sunshine, games went on as schedule and players all across Rhode Island put on some pretty big performances.

It was a good thing if you’re a softball player, parent or fan, but a bad thing if you’re trying to narrow down a list of nominees for Providence Journal Softball Player of the Week.

Somehow, we managed. This weeks five nominees put up cartoonish numbers for their teams and picking a winner won’t be easy – which is why we leave it up to our readers to decide.

To cast your vote, check out the bios below and then find the ballot at the bottom of the page to vote. Voting is open until Friday night and a winner will be announced next week. You can vote as many times as you’d like between now and then.

What does the winner receive? Internet clout.

The award is designed to be an interactive way for the state’s passionate softball communities to show their support for local players. We want schools, teams and players to create social media campaigns to garner support and try to earn as many votes as possible for their nominee. When a player wins, the whole community does – because it shows which pockets of the state truly support high school softball.

How does a player get nominated for Player of the Week?

The first step is hit – mash the ball or drive hitters crazy from the circle. The second step is making sure the head coach, as assistant (or anyone within the program, actually) reports the final score and stats to the Providence Journal. The easiest way to report the information is to email your box score and play by play from GameChanger to us at [email protected] by 8 p.m.

Coaches, when you use GameChanger – make sure you’re putting names in for both teams.

If your team doesn’t use GameChanger, start doing so immediately. If not, we’ll need a detailed email with the final score, what innings the runs were scored as well as the day’s top hitters – three from the winner, one from the losing side – as well as any pertinent pitching stats. You’ll also need to include any key information – clutch hits, game-swinging plays – so we can have a complete write up. Probably easier to just do GameChanger like everyone else does.

Teams that don’t report the information or have it available on GameChanger won’t have players considered for nomination. Every division is eligible for the award, so make sure you’re sending in results.

Providence Journal Softball Player of the Week nominees

Mary McGovern, Coventry softball

Mary McGovern, Coventry

The Oakers’ No. 2 pitcher got the job done in the circle and at the plate in a big way last week. McGovern threw six innings of two-run ball while going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in a win over Cumberland, then threw a four-inning no-hitter while hitting another bomb and driving in four against Bay View.

Bella Mazzarese, Westerly

Wonder if Rhode Island Energy rates dropped after the display Mazzarese put on. The junior hit three home runs and drove in 10 runs in the Bulldogs’ wins over Barrington and Toll Gate and she came up with a huge RBI in Westerly’s extra-inning win over North Kingstown.

Gretchen Dombeck, Pilgrim softball
Marin Prest, Pilgrim softball

Marin Prest, Pilgrim

The Patriots came up with three wins in three games this week and Prest had a hand in all of them. The senior catcher went 1-for-3 with a run in a win over Chariho, followed it by going 2-for-3 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs in a shutout of West Warwick, then went 2-for-5 with a run and driving in the go-ahead runs in an extra-innings win over Chariho.

Portsmouth High freshman Barbara Rainey was the Patriots Unsung Hero this season.

Barbara Rainey, Portsmouth

Sunny skies powered Rainey, who had a monster week at the plate for the Patriots. She hit two home runs, drove in six and scored four times in a blowout win over BNS, then hit another bomb and drove in two runs in a loss to out-of-state Ludlowe on Saturday.

Phoenyx Silva, La Salle Softball

Phoenyx Silva, La Salle

If you look at the numbers, Silva should be the only candidate this week. The senior was beyond dominant in wins over Cranston West, Cumberland and out-of-state Cheshire and continues to show walking her is the only option. Silva went 7-for-12 in the three games, hitting five home runs and two doubles, driving in 11 runs while scoring eight times.
