HILLSDALE COUNTY — Week 4 was a productive week for Hillsdale County boys track and field competitors, and the results were highlighted by a standout invitational effort from one Reading track and field star.

The Rangers traveled to Union City for the annual invitational event held by the Chargers. Despite weather conditions playing a role, the team ended up finishing fifth overall in a crowded team field. Junior Brayden Wright led the team with multiple wins, and he ultimately was voted by the entire coaching field as the Male Athlete of the Meet. He also qualified for the state meet in the 200-meter dash.

He placed first in the 100-meter dash (11.40 time) and first in the 200 (22.92). He also led the 4×100 (45.42) team of Aidan Clark, Gaven McKibbin and Grant Penney to a first-place finish. He then led the 4×200 team of Carter Bassage, Will Elder and McKibbin to a first-place finish (1:34.19).

Earlier in the week, he also placed first in a league meet in the 100, 200, 4×100 and 4×400.

The Reading boys track team also had winners in the 400 (Gaven McKibbin; 51.99 PR) at the UC Invite. They also had winners in the 110 hurdles (Bassage, 17.25), 400 (McKibbin; 53.59), 800 (Owen Parker; 2:20.74 PR) and 4×200 (Peyton Green, Marco Bailey, Preston Charters, Aidan Clark; 1:55.83) in the league meet.

The Rangers weren’t the only team to battle the weather at invitationals in Week 4 and earn wins.

Hillsdale Academy athletes set school records

Hillsdale Academy traveled to Mason to compete in the Bulldog invite and had multiple winners.

Leading the running events was Dawson Scharer who won the 400-meter dash event with a PR time of 50.81. The 4×800 team of Reece Poole, Luke Molenkamp, Zane Socha and Grayson Rorick won with a time of 8:13.73.

Grayson Rorick broke the school record in the 3,200-meter dash with a time of 9:28 despite taking second, showing how tough the competition was in the crowded field of competitors. He wasn’t the only Colt to break a school record in Week 4.

Junior Dawson Scharer broke the school 100-meter dash record at the SCAA Jamboree in Bellevue. He took first with a time of 11:41 to set a new best for Colt history.

Scharer also won the 200 dash with a PR time of 22:83. Senior Alex Richards won the 400 with a time of 55:21, a new PR. Rorick won the 800-meter dash (1:58.48 PR). Reece Poole won the 1,600 run (4:41.84 PR). The 4×400 team of Luke Alvarez, Reece Poole, Henry Lindley and Alex Richards won with a time of 3:47.78. Socha won the high jump with a clearance of 5-feet, 10 inches.

Other Winners

Hillsdale athletes battled Clinton and Blissfield in a league meet. Carter Myers, junior, won the pole vault event with a PR clearance height of 11-feet. The Hornets also competed at an invitational in Ohio, although the full results of that event were not available at the writing of this article.

Jonesville athletes competed at Hanover-Horton against Cascades opponents. Sophomore Caleb Blonde ran three of the long running events, winning the 400 (51.84 PR) and the 1,600 (4:38.36). Senior Zander Goodwin won the 300 hurdles with a new PR of 41.5 seconds. The 4×400 team of Caleb Blonde, Mason Jordan, John Milks and Logan Stanton took first with a time of 3:34.63.

In the field events, Jonesville senior Scotty Aube won shot put (42-feet, 8 inches), and senior Cooper Stevens won discus (143-feet, 8 inches). Pole vault saw senior Makinlee Packer win with a new PR height of 12-feet, 6 inches. Jonesville did travel to the Leslie Invite, but weather put a damper on that with event cancellations.

Pittsford had athletes win in a league meet at home against SCAA opponents. The 4×100 team of Teagan Williams, Noah Pan, Mondale Kneffler and Brendon Nave won with a time of 46.84. the 4×200 team of Kneffler, Pann, Williams and Nave won with a time of 1:36.56. The 4×400 team of Pann, Williams, Jacob Drawe and Nave won with a time of 3:46.85.

Pittsford freshman Draven Moor won high jump with a clearance height of 5-feet, 7 inches. Senior Teagan Williams won pole vault with a clearance of 12-feet. Sophomore Brendon Nave won with a distance of 19-feet, 1 1/4 inches.

The Waldron 4×800 team of Ryan Anderson, Jayden Justice, Aiden Williams and Collin Williams won with a time of 9:51.80.

Will Carleton Academy sophomore Castin Cousino won the 800-meter dash (2:22.07) at the Pittsford-hosted league meet.
