WAUSAU – D.C. Everest softball coach Katie Shulfur said trust is one of the driving factors to the Evergreens 11-0 undefeated start to the 2025 season.
Last year, the season concluded for the Evergreens at the hands of a 1-0 loss to the eventual Division 1 sectional champions New Richmond. This season, the Evergreens have answered the call of redemption, downing the squad that knocked them off the tracks of their championship aspirations and taking the first game in the critical conference series against SPASH who walked away with the division last year.
Shulfur said throughout the season the team has created a trusting culture, which makes the highs and the lows of a softball season easy to endure, together.

“We’ve been together for three full years, some of us four full years, and being able to trust in our abilities and be able to put everything out there has been really working for us,” said Shulfur.
“We’ve hit quite a few patches where our bats haven’t come alive right away but with doing certain things in practice and constantly talking with each other and understanding that even if we get scored on it’s not something that is going to tank our confidence. We know that we have to score to win and it might take some time, and the girls being accepting of that has been key for us.”
At the midway point of the season, the Evergreens have a firm grip on the Wisconsin Valley Conference. As of now it is a two-team race between the Evergreens and the Panthers with D.C. Everest holding the advantage after knocking off SPASH 7-1 on April 8. D.C. Everest is currently undefeated overall while SPASH holds a 4-2 conference record.
On May 1, D.C. Everest will meet SPASH for their final meeting of the 2025 season at their home field with a chance to snatch a commanding advantage in the WVC with a series sweep of the Panthers.

That feat would put them squarely back into striking position to reach their goals after coming up just short last season, losing by a run.
“One of the goals that the girls made right away is that they want to be outright conference champions, just with not getting that last year, and it was that SPASH game, the two of them that were the deciding factors,” Shulfer said.
And the year before we shared that we want to be outright conference champions but they know we have to focus on one game at a time, and then from there, it’s going to be checking off every regional game to sectional game. We’ve been looking at making that state appearance, since we’ve been knocked out for the past couple years in the sectional semifinal game by teams who have made it to the state tournament, and then we’ll work towards potentially being state champions.”
