One of the greatest reasons behind UNC’s 2024 run to the College World Series was its bullpen, which featured guys like future MLB Draft pick Dalton Pence.
North Carolina’s starting pitching last year largely struggled due to injuries. 2025 ace Jake Knapp missed the entire 2024 season due to a UCL tear, while star freshman Folger Boaz was later shut down with an elbow injury.
Luckily, the Diamond Heels featured a shutdown bullpen with multiple stars. One of those top stars was Matthew Matthijs, who, at one point, led the entire NCAA in wins.
Matthijs ended 2024 with a UNC-best 12 victories, but his 2025 start wasn’t as efficient, with just a 1-1 record and 4.34 earned run average in 17 relief appearances.
Unfortunately for North Carolina, its bullpen star won’t play anymore baseball this year. On Monday, April 21, Diamond Heels head coach Scott Forbes announced Matthijs will miss the remainder of 2025 with an arm injury.
UNC head coach Scott Forbes said today in this week’s interview with @gracegnugent and @TAshleyIC that junior reliever Matthew Matthijs is out for the season with an arm injury.

UNC will rely heavily on its starting pitching, which is lights-out through its first 40 games of the 2025 college baseball season.
Knapp is tied for the NCAA lead with eight victories – and is 11th nationally with a 1.91 ERA. Aidan Haugh is 4-3 with just a 3.06 ERA, plus he leads North Carolina with 59 strikeouts. Jason DeCaro has a 5-3 record, with his victory total second-most on the Diamond Heels.
UNC has several stars in its current bullpen, led by closer Walker McDuffie (team-best four saves), but losing a guy like Matthijs hurts for the postseason.
