Friday officially marked the final day that players could enter their name into the college football transfer portal for the spring window.
While one would think there wouldn’t be that much activity, ESPN reported over 700 FBS players opted to find a new home via the portal this month alone. One program that was frequently making headlines throughout the spring window were the UCLA Bruins.
They were the lucky winners of the sweepstakes centered around Tennessee quarterback transfer Nico Iamaleava, which also led to them landing his younger brother and four-star freshman, Madden Iamaleava, who was at Arkansas for a few months.
As expected, the moves may have not been well received by those in the room, as the Bruins lost two former four-star quarterback recruits on Friday. Both Robert McDaniel, who enrolled in January, and Dermaricus Davis, who was a four-star in the 2024 class that transferred in from Washington, hit the portal on the final day.
Davis didn’t record a stat in his lone season with the program, while McDaniel seemed to need a bit of development before being ready for a role.
In addition to losing these two the portal, the Bruins also lost presumed starter and App State transfer Joey Aguilar, who essentially completed an unofficial trade with Iamaleava by transferring to Tennessee. Whether or not the Iamaleava experiment will work out for UCLA is yet to be determined, but clearly, second-year head coach DeShaun Foster is willing to go all in on the two brothers.
