The PGA Championship, the second of four men’s majors in 2025, is May 15-18 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. The field is shaping up and while the official announcement from the PGA of America is expected later this week, there’s a good number of golfers already qualified. For example, all winners of the PGA are in and recent winners of the other majors also get in.
The PGA is the only major with no amateurs and many argue it boasts the best field of the four majors. When the golf balls start flying at Quail Hollow in three weeks, there will be 156 golfers in the field. The latest from the PGA Tour’s qualifier tracker explains some recent updates to field, including Rickie Fowler in particular, who’s listed with an asterisk. One of the provisions for qualification is “all 2023 Ryder Cup members inside top 100 of Official World Golf Ranking as of May 5.”
The latest OWGR update shows Fowler has moved down two spots to No. 125, and it’s noted that he’s now the only one of the 2023 Ryder Cuppers from either team not yet in the field.
Some other fluctuations show that Sam Stevens, solo third at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, will qualify for the PGA and Erik van Rooyen, solo second at the CJ Cup, most certainly will get in. Van Rooyen is up from 101 to 66 in the OWGR and the PGA Tour tracker states that the “PGA of America usually adds all golfers inside the top 100 of the OWGR who have yet to qualify.”
The two PGA Tour events this week — the Truist Championship and the Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic — offer one last chance to the winners who are not already eligible. Further, the PGA of America will pass out special exemptions and golfers inside the top 100 in OWGR not already qualified typically get a spot.
