Manchester City are currently stuck in a fight to qualify for next season’s Champions League. No game across the end of the season will be a formality for Pep Guardiola’s side. They are currently a team that is ushering out the old and also bringing in the new. But when you look ahead at City’s rebuild the building blocks are there for Manchester City. They just need to fill the gaps to strengthen Pep Guardiola’s squad.
City has a host of players for Pep Guardiola to build his next team around. Erling Haaland signed a mammoth contract extension with the club in January. He will be City’s frontman for the next decade. Alongside him, there are Jeremy Doku and Savinho, who are young and developing wingers. Both players have their flaws but they are developing as players. Oscar Bobb is another, and we likely won’t see the best of him until next season after his injury-ravaged season. Omar Marmoush will be a weapon for Pep Guardiola’s side and he is in the prime of his career.
Manchester City have the creativity behind Haaland but they do need to add more. Phil Foden has been down this season but he is entering his prime years. Claudio Echeverri and Divine Mukasa loom as City’s next generation of playmakers. Nico O’Reilly has arrived in the City first team at left-back but he seems destined for a role in midfield in time. Nico should slot in as a number 8 for next season and Rodri’s return from injury will further strengthen City’s midfield.
At the back Manchester City have the young foundations in their squad. Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis have shown real glimpses of quality since arriving at the club in January. Juma Bah is showing at Lens he is a great centre-back prospect. Josko Gvardiol is one of the best young defenders in the game and his move to centre-back could see him form a strong partnership with Ruben Dias for the future.
The gaps in Manchester City’s squad need to filled and when they are you can see a bright future for Manchester City.
But there are gaps in Pep Guardiola’s squad. We don’t know what the future holds for Ederson or Stefan Ortega. So City may need a goalkeeper or two this summer. That remains to be seen.
Both full-back positions need strengthening. Rico Lewis and Matheus Nunes are employed at right-back. But neither player looks to be a lock for the role in Manchester City’s rebuild. Josko Gvardiol and Nico O’Reilly are sharing duties at left-back so there is merit to signing a left-back as well as a right-back this summer.
Manchester City’s midfield is in desperate need of reinforcing. Kevin De Bruyne will leave the club at the end of the season. Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic futures also appear in doubt. If City sign the right type of midfielders to complement Foden, Rodri and Nico they should bounce back quickly from this season’s disappointment.
Up front Pep Guardiola’s squad needs more creativity. That is obvious. Perhaps they could also benefit from signing a world class winger as well. If they get both of those positions right to add to what they already have you can see how quickly Manchester City can bounce back.
Pep Guardiola’s squad already has the building blocks for Manchester City’s future. A few quality signings will round out City’s squad for next season and beyond. This season has been a battle for Manchester City. But there is light at the end of tunnel.
If they can secure Champions League qualification and add the necessary pieces to their squad in the summer and have better luck on the injury front they could return to the summit of English football very quickly. That’s the challenge in front of Hugo Viana and company to complete this summer.
