It has been a roller-coaster of a season for the Tampa Bay Rays to this point in 2025. Entering Wednesday with a record of 16-19, they are still only 3.5 games back of the American League East division lead, but that gap is seemingly getting wider by the day.
A big part of that recent divide between the division leading New York Yankees and the Rays has been Tampa’s current home losing streak. After Tuesday’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, it sits at a season-long five games, and things do not look to get any easier over the duration of the current homestand.

The rest of the homestand, as much as you can call it that with the games taking place at George Steinbrenner Field, holds two more games against the Phillies and three against the Milwaukee Brewers. Philadelphia is a legitimate World Series contender, while the Brewers won the National League Central in 2024 and look to keep pace with the Chicago Cubs this year.
The losing streak has shown just where the Rays stand regarding the MLB landscape. It includes Tuesday’s loss to the Phillies, three over the last weekend to the Kansas City Royals, another playoff contender, and one to the Yankees, the frontrunner for the American League’s representative in the World Series.
Tampa Bay’s roster is solid, and the pitching staff can hang with the best of them. But the offense just does not have enough true star power to take that next step and put the Rays in the postseason picture this year. That does not mean it can’t happen in the future; it will just take patience.
Longest-tenured Rays, currently on Tampa Bay’s active roster:
• Brandon Lowe – August, 2018.
• Yandy Diaz – December, 2018
• Pete Fairbanks – July, 2019
• Drew Rasmussen – May, 2021 pic.twitter.com/I89VbnJaj9— Taylor Jenkins (@TJenkinsTampa) May 5, 2025
There is a lot of baseball left to play, and things can certainly turn around. The Detroit Tigers shocked everyone with their postseason appearance last year, and they’re doing it again to this point in 2025.
As things currently stand, however, a record hovering around .500 may be the best bet for this Rays team this year.
