There may not be many blockbuster trades during the NFL draft, but the Pittsburgh Steelers could try to pull one off. Pittsburgh just paid D.K. Metcalf handsomely, and they didn’t do it to have Mason Rudolph throwing him the football.

They’re desperate for a quarterback and desperation can lead to some bold moves, such as calling the Carolina Panthers to get ahead of the New Orleans Saints in the NFL draft. If Shedeur Sanders slips out of the top-3, Pittsburgh could pick up the phone. The same could be true if they love Jaxson Dart.

Derek Carr potentially being out for the season will likely only inflate the sentiment New Orleans will go quarterback in the first round. Dart dropping to the Steelers at 21 is a gamble at this point. Are the Steelers too desperate to be patient?

It would take a lot for Carolina to drop that far back. The drafttek trade chart suggests more than a second round pick in compensation. The Steelers don’t even have a second round pick this year, but they could deal George Pickens. Pickens is going into a contract year, and the Panthers are in need of a wide receiver.

Carolina made a similar move to grab Bryce Young. While that backfired, the presence of Metcalf and Pickens being due for a payday soon could make the Steelers more willing to part with their 2022 second round pick.

The idea of the Saints grabbing the Steeler’s favorite quarterback or last quarterback with a first round quarterback could influence Pittsburgh to jump the Saints in order to get their franchise leader.
