It was the shot heard ’round the world. Okay, maybe it wasn’t as dramatic as that. Still, when two of the NFL’s biggest brands announce a trade with one another and it involves one of the game’s great young talents at a glamour position, the Philadelphia Eagles and all the other 31 franchises pay attention.

Rumblings began during the early morning hours on Wednesday, May 7. The chatter was about the Dallas Cowboys working the phones to land some talent at the wide receiver position. They had zeroed in on Pittsburgh Steelers star George Pickens. That will undoubtedly wake us up, right?

News of the trade came later.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter report, Pickens is a Cowboy. That may lead to shockwaves and a few dominoes falling. That leads us to something published earlier, the possible landing spot for a veteran free-agent receiver. Philly was mentioned, and recent events may add them to that list.

Should the recent Cowboys addition affect the Eagles’ roster build and possible interest in Amari Cooper?

NFL.com Senior News Writer Kevin Patra recently cooked up an intriguing read. He listed seven potential landing spots for veteran free agent receiver Amari Cooper. Dallas topped the list. Philadelphia landed among the top five at number four.

That birthed a conversation among Eagles-green circles. Should Philly be interested? The answer is ‘no’.

It’s fair to state that Amari Cooper might be one of the top remaining veteran free agents at the wide receiver position. It’s also well-known that the Birds have often searched for a big-bodied slot receiver for a while. This one feels like the Julio Jones acquisition, though. Amari is and was a brilliant talent at wide receiver, but his best days are behind him. Philly is better suited to rely on what they already have on the roster.

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are the best one-two punch at the position in all of professional football. Yes, we considered the guys in Miami and Cincinnati when we said that.

Ainias Smith and Johnny Wilson enter year two in the Eagles’ offense. Jahan Dotson and Terrace Marshall provide solid depth options, though nothing past this season is promised to either. We aren’t even sure that Marshall is assured of a roster spot.

Then, there is the other angle, cost. At this stage of his career, Cooper may be too expensive an addition when one measures potential production and return on investment.
