Three NFL teams poached coaches from Sean Payton’s staff this offseason.

The Denver Broncos lost assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo to the New York Jets, passing game coordinator John Morton to the Detroit Lions and tight ends coach Declan Doyle to the Chicago Bears.

Following those losses, the Broncosannounced 15 changes to the coaching staff last month, including additions and in-house promotions. Speaking at the NFL’s Annual League Meeting in Florida earlier this week, Payton had a funny quip about the team’s departures.

“[S]ome of the other positions were as they all of the sudden got promoted, I felt like every time I left town, when I came back there was another coach gone,” Payton said Monday. “So I started trying not to leave town. I think we’re full now.”

Denver did manage to keep promising young coaches Davis Webb and Jim Leonhard, who received big promotions to stay with the Broncos. Those two will likely continue climbing the coaching ranks — either in Denver or with a promotion elsewhere. For now, though, the Broncos have Davis and Leonhard set to return for at least the 2025 campaign.
