They say three is a magic number. In the third round of the 2025 NFL draft, the Seattle Seahawks drafted only the third quarterback during John Schneider’s tenure as general manager by selecting Jalen Milroe from Alabama. The last time Schneider drafted a quarterback in the third round was of course Russell Wilson, who made the No. 3 jersey a common gameday attire while he was Seattle’s signal caller.

While Milroe met with the Seahawks during the pre-draft process at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center, I would be willing to bet not many 12’s expected Seattle to ultimately pick the Crimson Tide starter. Especially since they have already invested so heavily in the quarterback position by signing Sam Darnold and bringing Drew Lock back. Milroe possesses incredible talent, however his lack of accuracy and questionable decision making had him listed as… well, a second or third round pick… according to his official NFL draft profile. The idea of Milroe becoming a starter in 2025 was not a likely one.

But you know what? That’s fine. What the Seahawks have done is finally solidify an actual quarterback succession plan for the first time in the John Schneider era. Right now, they’ve got Sam Darnold under contract for three years. Well, technically it’s a glorified “one-year” deal, as the Seahawks could get out of it after the 2025 season if they truly wanted to do so. Assuming Darnold is fine and Seattle wants to keep him beyond the coming season, then it just means they’re set at the position, and will allow Milroe more time to develop as a passer at the NFL level.

Milroe is only 22 years old. Spending time on the bench, getting NFL caliber coaching and the opportunity to learn behind actual professional veterans will be invaluable. The direction and future of the quarterback position is now clear for the Seahawks, who were somewhat in a limbo with Geno Smith, as the next steps beyond him were never obvious.

Milroe is far too uniquely gifted to ignore outright, and the Seahawks felt he was more than worth taking a chance on to perhaps develop into something special for them.
