The New Orleans Saints couldn’t address all of their needs in the 2025 NFL draft, so they’re busy moving to check items off the to-do list in the free agent market. On Monday afternoon, the Saints announced that they brought in defensive end Chris Rumph II. He’s a 26-year old whose NFL career started as a fourth-round draft pick by the Los Angeles Chargers back in 2021, Brandon Staley’s first season as Chargers head coach. He’s now the Saints defensive coordinator. Adding Rumph to the mix gives the defensive front some more experience in Staley’s system.
Rumph, listed at 6-foot-2 and 244 pounds, has appeared in 37 games while dealing with foot injuries the last two years. He’s probably a long shot to make the team with New Orleans but should compete with guys like Isaiah Foskey and Fadil Diggs for that third spot in the rotation behind Chase Young and Carl Granderson.
He’s the latest of several players we’ve seen the Saints bring in to help install Staley’s playbook. The Saints also signed Jonah Williams for that role, who played more to the inside of the formation than out on the edge under Staley. None of these guys should be expected to start, but they’re valuable in the meeting room to help break down film and explain schematic responsibilities unique to the system Staley is running. But maybe they’ll surprise us once training camp starts in late July.
