A hectic weekend for the Oklahoma Sooners team just turned back OU’s way.

OU defensive tackle David Stone withdrew his name from the transfer portal Sunday, according to a report from Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer at 247Sports. Stone had entered the transfer portal on Friday night, according to multiple reports.

Stone was the No. 9 recruit in the Class of 2024 out of IMG Academy in Florida, though he began his preps career at Del City High. He logged six tackles, including two for loss, and a sack as a freshman and was expected to get more reps in the rotation along the middle of Oklahoma’s defensive line his sophomore season.

Oklahoma football personnel reached out to Stone as early as Saturday morning in an effort to keep him in Norman, according to George Stoia III at SoonerScoop. The defensive tackle had retweeted a post from last year that stated NIL would not be a factor in his choice of a school, after social media regulars speculated that Stone was leaving OU because of a money issue.

The Sooners, despite their 6-7 record in 2024, were ranked 19th in total defense last year. Oklahoma added quarterback John Mateer from Washington State via the transfer portal after the season and a bevy of experienced wide receivers for him to throw to in hopes an injection of explosiveness on that side of the ball combined with another stalwart defensive season will improve the Sooners’ fortunes in 2025.

Stone, who was immediately ranked the No. 1 player available in the portal when he initially announced Friday, is expected to join Gracen Halton, Damonic Williams and Jayden Jackson as the regulars at defensive tackle in the fall.
