The Lewis Cass baseball team moved to 4-0 on the early season with a sweep of Sheridan on Saturday in Walton.

The Kings defeated the Blackhawks by scores of 5-1 and 10-1 as starting pitchers Brody Williams and Kaison Hipsher-Walker combined to allow just two runs on the day in 14 innings.

Williams fired a two-hitter while allowing one walk while striking out 14 in the opener.

The Kings managed just two hits but were able to manufacture five runs as they took advantage of three walks, five hit by pitches and one error.

Williams helped his own cause with an RBI double. Braylen Mayhill had a single and run scored. Wade Tocco, Owen Cotner-Graves and Nolan Hahn each had an RBI. Trevor Rowe added two runs scored.

Hipsher-Walker held the Blackhawks to one run on six hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts in game two.

The Kings had seven hits and took advantage of seven Sheridan errors.

Cotner-Graves had a home run, double and two RBIs to lead the offense. Rowe had two hits and two RBIs. Tocco had a pair of RBIs. Williams, Mayhill and Gavin Smith each added a hit.

The Kings’ 4-0 start has them already just one win short of last year’s win total, when they went 5-17. They’re looking to post their first winning season since 2019.

CASTON SPLITS

Caston split a pair of games during a tripleheader versus LaVille and Manchester Saturday in Fulton.

The Comets opened with a 3-2 win over former HNAC opponent LaVille. Eli Holloway had a complete-game win, allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out eight.

The Comets had just two hits but took advantage of four LaVille errors. Holloway had both hits and went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Logan Mollenkopf and Lane Halterman also each scored a run. Gavin Mollenkopf added an RBI.

The Comets lost to Manchester 15-5 in six innings later in the afternoon. Gavin Mollenkopf allowed nine runs (five earned) on eight hits and six walks in four innings, striking out two. Ryder Craig allowed six runs (five earned) on three hits and six walks in 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Holloway went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Tucker Woolever went 2-for-3. Gavin Mollenkopf had a double and RBI. Noah Herd added a single.

BOYS GOLF ROCHESTER INVITE

Logansport opened the season by bringing home some hardware by shooting a 328 to win the 15-team Rochester Invitational at Round Barn Golf Course.

Graham Taylor was the second low medalist with a 76 to lead the Berries. He was followed by Louis Rozzi (81), Eli Baldwin (84), Evan Brandstatter (87) and Logan Lange (91).

Cass shot a 360 to place eighth. Michael Myers led the Kings with an 86, followed by Nolan Hines (87), Brody Hillis (92), Cole Rush (95) and Matthew Minnick (107).

SOFTBALL LOGAN SWEEPS

Logansport (3-0) rolled past Twin Lakes by scores of 10-0 and 12-1 at Fincher Field.

Natalee Packard pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener, striking out eight in the five-inning game.

Gracie Risley went 3-for-3 with a triple, double and RBI. Adrienne Scott went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Brooklynn Hagerty had a home run and two RBIs. Bella Nicoles had a double and two RBIs. Kellyn Cripe had a triple and run scored. Packard, Kate Spradling, Teagan Wolf and Rylinn Spradling each added a hit.

Risley earned the win in game two, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out 11 in the five-inning contest.

The Berries jumped on the Indians early. Kellyn Cripe led off the game as she did in game one with a triple to left center field. Risley followed with a RBI double to left. Hagerty then hit a line drive two-run run homer to center for her second of the day making the score 3-0.

Bianca Cortez led off the second inning with a double to left. Mya Hershberger’s RBI single scored Cortez. Lucy Gordon drew a walk. Cripe’s bunt single loaded the bases. Risley drew a bases loaded walk to force in Hershberger. Packard walked with one out to plate Gordon. Cripe scored on a RBI ground out by Hagerty.

The Lady Berries score five more runs in the fourth. Cripe led off with an infield single. Risley doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Cripe scored on a wild pitch. Packard walked putting runners at second and third. Hagerty doubled scoring Risley and Packard. Scott lined an inside the park home run to right field scoring Hagerty.

The Lady Berries collected 11 hits in game two. Cripe, Risley, Hagerty and Cortez had multiple hits.

Logan travels to Tipton Tuesday and hosts Tipton Wednesday for a pair of Hoosier Conference games.

PIONEER SPLITS

Pioneer (2-2 overall) topped Rochester 13-1 and dropped a contest to John Glenn 11-9 at Rochester.

Lois Layer held Rochester to one run on three hits and four walks while striking out six in a five-inning game.

Averi Layer went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs. Lois Layer and Hollie Zellers each had two hits and an RBI. Laylah Demond added a double and run scored. Ava Ott, Kamryn Newby and Olivia Fisher each added a hit. Ava Beasy scored a pair of runs.

Katelynn Haynes took the loss in game two, allowing 10 runs (one earned) on 13 hits and two walks, striking out two in six innings. The Panthers committed four errors. Lois Layer allowed one run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in one inning.

Beasy went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Addison Kennell had a double, single and three RBIs. Newby, Demond and Lois Layer had two hits apiece. Zellers added a hit.

SOUTH CENTRAL 6, WINAMAC 3

Winamac (3-1) suffered its first loss of the season at South Central.

The Warriors fell into a 6-1 deficit after three innings and couldn’t come back.

Brooke Rausch allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits in four innings. Adrienne Hall worked two scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out four.

Lauren Bruce had two hits and two RBIs for the Warriors. Brody Goodman had two hits. Maggie Keller added a double and RBI.
