Former New England Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson believes the Bill Belichick era in North Carolina might already be going off the rails before it officially gets on the tracks.
On “WEEI Afternoons Tuesday,” the three-time Super Bowl champion suggested the Tar Heels consider firing Belichick, following the 73-year-old coach’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, releasing a private email to the public and an awkward interview on “CBS Mornings.”
Hudson, who has been seen on the field during team practices at North Carolina, was reportedly a constant presence during Belichick’s recent CBS interview. Per TMZ, Hudson “repeatedly butted” into the interview during the conversation. One viral clip includes her shutting down the interviewer’s question on how she and Belichick met.
She also released a private, fiery email from Belichick to the people in his camp about the promotion for his new book, “The Art of Winning,” on Instagram. It should be noted that the image of the email was accompanied by the Taylor Swift song “Look What You Made Me Do.”
“I think the Carolina Tar Heels should consider firing Bill Belichick,” Johnson said. “They should consider letting him go at this point. …I just think, just what you’ve seen so far. The behaviors with Jordon, that dynamic, her being on the football field, her kind of just, I think, embarrassing Bill.
“People want to go, ‘Well, she’s taking control of Bill.’ You think Bill doesn’t have any say in how these things go? Of course he does. He’s okay with what she’s doing. You don’t think he knows that that email was being posted on her Instagram? Of course he knows. He’s signing off on that.”
Hudson and Belichick have been in the spotlight with people taking an interest in their 49-year age gap. What people do in their free time and who they date is their own business. However, it could become a problem if that bleeds over into Belichick’s work life.
According to TMZ, there’s a “growing sense” that the couple’s relationship “could become a problem” at North Carolina. It’s for reasons like this that Johnson believes the university should seriously consider parting ways with the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach.
“…Those are bad decisions that make him and the university look really bad, and question whether or not he is of sound mind and should be running a football team at the University of North Carolina,” said Johnson. “I think it’s just something you have to really, really consider. Just question the decision-making from the head coach at this point for those reasons.”
