The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the best field generals of all time in Patrick Mahomes, so it is safe to say that there will be no quarterback controversy any time soon. But it never hurts to try to get some insurance in case something were to happen to Mahomes.
Following the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, the Chiefs decided to extend a rookie minicamp invite to Southeast Missouri quarterback Paxton DeLaurent.
While he would not be the team’s QB2 if he made the roster, he could be fighting for the QB3 spot.
The two players that are competing for the spot at the moment are Bailey Zappe and Chris Oladokun. Zappe has a career touchdown to interception ratio of 12-14, while Oladokun has only thrown one pass in his career thus far.
That could leave the door open for someone like DeLaurent to come in and take the job.
The 23-year-old, a native of Camdenton, finished his final season at SEMO with 4,073 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, both of which led the Ohio Valley Conference. His 6-5, 230 pound frame could also play a factor in how willing the Chiefs are to give him a chance.
While Mahomes and Garder Minshew have the starting and QB2 jobs locked up, the third spot in the Chiefs’ quarterback room could be up for grabs. DeLaurent could be here just to serve as a camp arm … but will be hoping to make an impression and take that spot at rookie minicamp.
