When it comes to NFL draft prospects, the Carolina Panthers have themselves a type. And that type, according to president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan, must have the right numbers.
Morgan chatted with reporters on Tuesday, a little over a week before the start of the 2025 draft. He was asked if he’s less inclined to select players who didn’t produce noteworthy statistics during their collegiate careers.
“Obviously, you want the production. You want the body of work to be there,” Morgan replied. “You obviously don’t wanna draft guys that weren’t productive in college. Obviously, we want guys with a lot of production, and I think that usually translates to the next level.”
That could eliminate at least a few of this year’s prospects who have been linked to the Panthers and their first-round pick, particularly at the edge position.
University of Georgia pass rusher Mykel Williams, one of the perceived frontrunners for the eighth overall selection, may be on the bubble in Carolina’s eyes after recording just 14.0 sacks over three years. Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart, who notched just 1.5 sacks in each of his three seasons, could also be lower on the team’s board.
If Morgan’s very first first-round pick is any indication about production, then he’s not kidding. 2024’s choice, wide receiver Xavier Legette, amassed 71 receptions for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns in his final campaign at the University of South Carolina.
So if you’re still trying to connect the dots between the Panthers and their 2025 first-rounder, then you might have to follow the numbers.
