The New Orleans Saints recently interviewed an intriguing prospect who stems from the Division II level.
Per KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson, Grand Valley State defensive back Ian Kennelly met with the team after a standout pro day performance. At 6-foot-2, 209 pounds, Kennelly chalked up a 4.52 40-yard dash time, to go along with an impressive 4.18 short shuttle. As a player of his stature, Kennelly showed tremendous athleticism for a player at the defensive back position.
Over the course of his collegiate career, Kennelly’s production speaks for itself despite coming from a small school. In his four seasons with the Lakers, Kennelly intercepted eight passes while combining for 174 tackles. Six of those interceptions came in his last two seasons with the team, finishing up what was a stellar collegiate career.
Likely a priority free agent target to sign after the draft, Kennelly has a good combination of size and athleticism that could potentially translate on the big stage. With a need to get younger specifically at the safety position, it would be a smart move by the team to add multiple bodies at that spot either via the draft and at the conclusion of it.
