The New York Giants found their quarterback of the future on Thursday night, trading up and selecting Jaxson Dart of Ole Miss with the 25th pick in the 2025 NFL draft.
“I think he’s got a lot of qualities you look for in a good quarterback. He’s tough, makes good decisions with the football, pushes the ball down the field, has athletic ability, played in a really tough conference, started there at USC as a young guy. But did a really good job throughout this process of our meetings, board work, workouts and the tape that we liked,” head coach Brian Daboll said.
Despite the cost of acquiring Dart and the praise he received from Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, fans should not expect to see him on the field during the regular season.
The Giants signed veteran quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal worth up to $21 million in incentives in free agency and confirmed he will be their starter this coming season.
Dart will sit behind both Wilson and Jameis Winston as he develops.
“Russ will be our starter, and that’s how it’ll be once we get started here in the spring,” Daboll said. “So we’re going to do everything we can to develop (Dart) and bring him along. We have some good quarterbacks in the room relative to playtime, experience, some medals on the wall, if you will.”
For Dart, being a bit lower on the depth chart will be a new experience but one he’s willing to embrace. He understands his role as a rookie and doesn’t intend to make waves.
“It’s definitely new, but for me, this is just where my journey starts,” he said. “I’m stepping into an amazing room with a Super Bowl-winning quarterback who can see it from a different lens at such an elite level. I can’t wait to go learn from him, go learn from all the other guys in Tommy (DeVito) and Jameis in the room, and then just the team as a whole.”
Even if Wilson stumbles or goes down this season, Winston will be the next man up. Dart will see action in the preseason but that’s going to be about it.
