The Brooklyn Nets have 10 players that are free-agents of some sort this offseason after a 2024-25 NBA season in which the Nets had plenty of players going into the last year of their contracts. Brooklyn seeks to maintain cap flexibility throughout this rebuild, but they will have to think hard about guards Cam Thomas and D’Angelo Russell being on the open market.
Of the 10 players that will be free-agents for the Nets this summer, Thomas and Russell are regarded somewhere within the top-30 as both players have different ways that they can contribute to teams around the league. Thomas is regarded as the 21st-best free-agent this offseason by Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus while USA Today’s Jeff Zillgitt and Lorenzo Reyes have him ranked as the 11th-best free-agent.
Russell ranks as the 27th-best free-agent available this summer according to Pincus while Zillgitt and Reyes place him as the 24th-best free-agent. To be transparent, both of these lists were compiled 2-3 months before the regular season ended, but the statistics for both players remain the same and there could be some movement within free-agent rankings once the offseason gets into full swing.
Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. However, while he had the best statistical performance of his career, he also played just 25 games as he continued to deal with left hamstring strains that prevented him for establishing a rhythm.
Russell, 29, had one of his worst years of his career since the first few seasons when he was trying to establish himself in the league. Russell averaged 12.6 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per contest while shooting 39.0% from the floor and 31.4% deep while splitting time between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Nets. Russell was also dealing with a troublesome right ankle so it’s possible that his free-agency prospects weren’t affected much by his performance this season.
