NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson had the best season of his career with the Nets during the 2024-25 NBA season amidst a never-ending rumor cycle regarding his trade prospects. For the time being, Johnson will be in Brooklyn for the next two seasons, but if that changes, he would like to be kept in the loop by general manager Sean Marks.
“Definitely, definitely go to him and ask, you know, because I have a very vested interest in what we’re doing here. You know, I feel like I’ve put a lot of effort into trying to be a part of this program,” Johnson said during his exit interview on Monday. Since before this season began, Johnson’s name came up in trade rumors for virtually half of the teams in the league looking for a sharpshooting forward. However, to be clear, Johnson wants to build something in Brooklyn.
“And I take that very seriously. And I feel like I’ve also been given a responsibility to have that approach,” Johnson continued. “I would definitely like to know everything that’s going on and I understand that I’m not going to be let in on every decision or have say in every decision. But I would like to know going forward. But it is also my job to, at this point, work on myself, get better, and handle whatever comes along being a pro in the situation.”
Johnson, 29, is coming off the best season of his 6-year NBA career as he was put in a position as one of team’s main scoring options after Mikal Bridges was traded to the New York Knicks in the offseason. Johnson averaged 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 39.0% from three-point land.
Johnson has previously talked about how the trade rumor mill has affected him this season and yet, he has remained steadfast in wanting to be a part of what the Nets are trying to build. Johnson could be one of the players that Brooklyn is rumored to trade this offseason as he still remains one of the players that could help a myriad of teams that are looking for shooting on the wing.
This season has also taught Johnson what it is like to be a pro in the NBA, both on the court and off of it, something that could bode well for the franchise if it decides to hold on to him heading into next season.
“The biggest lesson I’d say would just be along the lines of probably just owning a bigger leadership role amongst our team and amongst our group, leadership kind of on and off the court,” Johnson explained.
