QUINIX Sport News: McAlester boys tennis finishes third at 5A Championships

McAlester High School boys tennis placed third at the Phil Barnes 5A Championships Thursday, marking its first top three finish since 2015.

The tournament, hosted at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center, featured 16 schools from around the state. Duncan placed first with 64 team points, Carl Albert took second with 61 and McAlester finished six points ahead of fourth-place Shawnee with 53 points.

Sophomore Wyatt Phillips represented as the No. 1 Singles for the Buffaloes and placed fourth after beating Duncan freshman Jaxon Mitchell. McAlester senior Matt Lungstrum was third in the Boys No. 2 Singles competition, defeating Shawnee freshman Carter Schollenbarger.

The Buffaloes’ duo of Chris Whaley and Alex Jurkiewicz took down Claremore to finish third in the Boys No. 1 Doubles competition and McAlester’s second doubles team finished fifth.

McAlester will next compete in the OSSAA Regional Tournament May 12 at Duncan High School.
