The American League Pitcher of the Month for April picked up right where he left off heading into May. Max Fried improved to 6-0, tying for the most wins in baseball, after Friday’s 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fried has an ERA of 1.19 and a opponents’ batting average of .207 . Things were no different in his first start in May as he threw seven shutout innings of one-hit ball and punched out six Rays en route to his sixth win.

On the other side of the mound, Tampa Bay sent out righty Ryan Pepiot, and he kept the Yankees in check through five innings, but was tagged for two earned runs after being replaced by Mason Montgomery, who gave up the only runs that the Yankees scored off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt.

Tampa Bay was coming off a hot West Coast road trip in which the Rays won five out of the six games against the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres. Since the road trip, the Rays offense has been non-existent, as they have only scored three runs in their last four games.

It will be an early start on Saturday as the Yankees look to take the three-game series. A couple of righties will be on the mount, with Clarke Schmidt for New York and Tampa Bay sending out Zach Littell.
