Marseille fans turned on Mason Greenwood on Saturday, before the former Manchester United forward scored twice in a 5-1 win over Montpellier.

Greenwood was recently dropped by manager Roberto De Zerbi with reports in France suggesting it was a result of his poor work rate in matches.

However, now back in the line-up fans shared the manager’s apparent feelings towards the 23-year-old by revealing a banner calling for more effort. The banner, which was held up in the north bend of Marseille’s Stade Vélodrome before the Ligue 1 match, read: “Greenwood, Henrique, get moving!!!”.

Luis Henrique, Greenwood’s team-mate, has also come under fire recently for showing a lack of effort.

Greenwood opened the scoring in the match by converting a penalty in the eighth minute before claiming his 18th league goal of the season in the second half to help De Zerbi’s side move ahead of Monaco in second place.

“Greenwood is a natural talent,” De Zerbi said last month when asked about the England striker. “All the credit goes to his mother and father. And I’m here to help him become more complete. When he needs a hug, a word of support, I gladly give it. And when I need to push him to give more, I have to do that too because that’s my job.

“I would especially like to help him be remembered, in this stadium and by these supporters, as one of the greatest players to have played here at the [Stade] Vélodrome.

“There have been so many great players here, but I think Greenwood has the qualities to be remembered that way. And I’m trying to help him progress.”

Greenwood joined Marseille last summer following a loan at Getafe. He was arrested in January 2022 and charged attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour which were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. Greenwood always denied any wrongdoing.

His move to France sparked protests from fans which launched a ‘Greenwood not welcome’ campaign ahead of him moving to the club.

Greenwood made his first and only appearance for England in September 2020 against Iceland but the FA confirmed last month that he had successfully switched his allegiance to Jamaica.
