The Auburn Tigers added some much-needed depth to the linebacker position over the weekend. The position is one of the most inexperienced on the roster with Demarcus Riddick as the most experienced player. Auburn added Maryland transfer Caleb Wheatland from the transfer portal on Sunday. Wheatland has one year of eligibility after playing the last three with the Terrapins.
247Sports has Wheatland as the ninth-ranked transfer portal linebacker and the 291st overall prospect. Last season, he collected 42 tackles with four sacks and seven tackles for loss. Auburn needs help in getting to the opponent’s backfield with Jalen McLeod and Eugene Asante now gone from the program. Over his three seasons with Maryland, Wheatland played in 35 games and totaled 100 tackles. He had seven and a half sacks and 15 tackles for loss.
Wheatland was a three-star prospect coming out of high school before signing with Maryland. He is from Chantilly, Virginia, where he played high school football at Westfield. When he signed in 2022, 247Sports rated Wheatland as the No. 9 player in Virginia and the 110th linebacker nationally.
With his playing experience, Wheatland should factor into the starting lineup for the Tigers this fall. Outside of Robert Woodyard, he is currently the only other upperclassman at the position. Woodyard is a junior for the 2025 season. Linebacker was a need for the Tigers after the spring, and they landed one of the better players in the transfer portal.
