Bill Belichick has done about all you can do in coaching, but he’s never had to deal with the transfer portal. The new North Carolina Tar Heels coach found out it can be a roller coaster. On Friday, Maryland defensive tackle Lavon Johnson made a transfer portal commitment to UNC. Hours later, Johnson flipped his commitment to Texas.
A member of the Terrapins‘ 2023 recruiting class, Johnson recorded 19 total tackles and one sack over his first two seasons. The Allentown, PA native will help replenish a defensive line group that has lost a lot of talent to the NFL.
Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton have entered the draft, while former recruits Jaray Bledsoe, Sydir Mitchell and Aaron Bryant have all transferred to other schools. The Longhorns added defensive line transfers like Purdue’s Cole Brevard, North Carolina’s Travis Shaw, Ohio State’s Hero Kanu and now Johnson to bolster the DL.

A 2023 three-star prospect, Johnson signed with Maryland over offers from Baylor, Indiana, Michigan, and Virginia Tech. As a true freshman in 2023, Johnson appeared in six games, recording five tackles and one sack before notching 19 tackles, one sack, and 1.5 tackles for a loss in eight games in 2024.
