Apr. 25—BYRON — The Byron boys basketball team will have a new varsity head coach next season.

Marcus LeLoux will take over for Kyle Finney, who is stepping down after nine seasons at the helm of the Bears and 28 years with the program, to spend more time with his family.

LeLoux, a middle school STEM teacher at Byron, was an assistant coach with the team for the past three seasons. His other experience includes serving as the head coach for the Rochester Century girls basketball team from 2014-2016 and as an assistant coach for the girls team at John Marshall prior to that.

At Century, LeLoux coached the Panthers to a 32-23 record in 55 games and went 1-2 in the playoffs. His teams averaged 60 and 61 points per game those years and were among the top scoring teams in the Big Nine Conference.

LeLoux, an Iowa native who played at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, also coached in South Dakota.

While in South Dakota, LeLoux coached girls basketball at Harrisburg High School and led the team to a Class A (of three classes) state title in 2012. Prior to that, LeLoux was an assistant boys coach at Harrisburg from 2007-08 and an assistant boys coach for four years at West High School in Iowa City, Iowa.

“He is a teacher here as well and was a great hire for our district,” Finney wrote in an email to the Post Bulletin. “I myself stepped down after spending the past 28 years here in Byron and five years previously. I will spend more time with my college-aged children and traveling with my wife.”

Finney led the Bears to two MSHSL boys basketball state tournaments — one in 2025 and the other in 2021 — finishing with a 158-91 career record. He will continue in his position teaching Global Studies at Byron Middle School.
