Logan Paulsen really likes the Commanders‘ 2025 NFL draft class.
Paulsen spent an hour with his co-host, Craig Hoffman, on their “Take Command” podcast episode, reviewing the Commanders’ draft. Here is what the former NFL tight end and current Commanders’ analyst had to say regarding the top two players the Commanders selected this past weekend.
- Josh Conerly Jr., OT, Oregon (29) “That tackle pick was good, because they managed to still get a first-round tier player. That piece (pick) became more valuable because he was still a first-round quality player. As opposed to edge players (at 29), where the draft was then full of second-round players.”
What Paulsen is saying is that yes, the Commanders definitely needed an edge rusher, and yes, it would have been good if the Commanders could have gotten a quality edge rusher at 29. However, Paulsen is asserting that the draft’s first-round quality edge rushers had already been selected before 29. Consequently, had the Commanders’ GM Adam Peters been committed and panicking, feeling he “had” to choose an edge rusher at 29, Peters would have been reaching and not obtaining the value he did in selecting Conerly.
Plain and simple? Paulsen believes Peters stuck to his draft board and, as a result, purchased a better value at 29 than had he reached, as former GM and head coach Ron Rivera did, when the name Jamin Davis was announced in the 2021 first round for Washington.
Paulsen also loved Washington’s second-round pick:
- Trey Amos, CB, Ole Miss (61) “When the Commanders were on the clock at 61, I asked myself which player has the least amount of questions among those whom the Commanders could select right here? And that player was Trey Amos…When I looked at my sheet, I said to myself, ‘he is the best player available. ‘ It was like that for me, and I am not even in the room with them (Adam Peters’ staff and Dan Quinn’s coaching staff). I think for those first two picks (Conerly, Amos) being so process-driven was fantastic.”
Sure enough, Paulsen, on the Commanders’ YouTube channel, live-streamed during the second round, did mention Amos, and I saw Paulsen take a quick look at his sheet, just as he mentioned. When the selection of Amos was made, Paulsen was enthusiastically supportive, stating his like of Amos before the pick.
