Yamal became the youngest player ever to debut for Barcelona in La Liga, stepping onto the field at just 15 years and 290 days in April 2023. During the 2023/24 season, he secured a regular spot in the first team, contributing key goals and assists in both domestic and European competitions.

In October 2023, he made history again by becoming the youngest goalscorer in La Liga, scoring against Granada at just 16 years and 87 days.

On the international stage, Yamal’s rise was just as meteoric. Called up by Spain coach Luis de la Fuente at age 16 for the final rounds of Euro 2024 qualification, he debuted on September 8th, 2023, against Georgia. In that match, he became both the youngest player and youngest goalscorer in the history of the Spanish national team.

As a starter in the Euro 2024 with Spain’s squad loaded with attacking talent, he delivered consistently high-level performances that powered his team to the title.

Across the tournament, Yamal played all seven matches (starting six), scored one goal, provided four assists (most in the tournament), won the Goal of the tournament and Best Young Talent of the Tournament.

The Spanish teenager is becoming what his Barcelona teammate Ansu Fati was once expected to be. Before Lionel Messi left the club, Fati was seen as the Argentine’s natural successor. But injuries and inconsistent performances held him back.

With Yamal shining in the first team, the 22-year-old Fati is firmly in the background—usually coming on only minutes before the final whistle.

Lamine Yamal kept Barcelona alive versus Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League semi-final

Barcelona started the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final trailing Inter Milan 2–0. But as soon as Lamine Yamal found a bit of space, he scored a stunning goal, leaving four defenders behind.

Later on, Barcelona equalized — though Yamal wasn’t directly involved this time. Pedri found Raphinha, and the Brazilian set up Ferran Torres, who slotted home the goal to make it 2–2 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Inter Milan’s right-back Denzel Dumfries scored his second goal of the night. But Barcelona responded immediately with a designed play involving Yamal once again — he faked a shot and let the ball run through to Raphinha, who was right behind him and smashed it into the back of the net. The credit for the goal ended up with the goalkeeper.

Next week, Barcelona will travel to Milan for the second leg in one of football’s most hostile environments: the San Siro. Despite the first match ending in a six-goal thriller, the tie remains wide open, with both teams needing only a one-goal margin to advance.
