One of Menez’ surprising 2025 Kentucky Derby picks: He is fading Sandman (6-1), even though he won the Arkansas Derby and is one of the top 2025 Kentucky Derby favorites. The colt is trained by Mark Casse, who is well-versed with Churchill Downs, having sent 10 previous starters to the Kentucky Derby. However, not only does Casse have no victories to show for it, but none of the 10 have even finished in the money. That includes Classic Empire, the morning-line favorite (4-1) in 2017 who finished in fourth place and 8 3/4 lengths back.
As for that Arkansas win, it featured just two other horses in the 2025 Kentucky Derby field, and both are 30-1 longshots. The only time that Sandman competed against a horse on par with him was at the Street Sense Stakes, where he not only didn’t win, but also finished third and five lengths back of the winner, Sovereignty.
