NEWBURGH — Josh Kain was named the next girls basketball coach at Castle High School.
The hire was approved during the Warrick County School Corp. board meeting on Monday. He takes over one of the top programs in the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference — the Knights are tied for first with 13 conference championships including five since 2018.
Castle went 15-8 last season and lost to Gibson Southern in the Class 4A sectional semfinal.

Kain was a standout at Kouts High School – he was an inaugural member into the school’s Hall of Fame – and remains third in program history with 1,580 career points. He later played for two seasons under coach Bruce Pearl at Southern Indiana. Kain is currently a math teacher at Castle and has been an assistant in the boys program for nearly two decades, in addition to coaching boys golf.
Bob Meier stepped down in February following a successful eight-year run. He led the Knights to 136 wins and four sectional championships. Castle never had a losing season under his watch and advanced to the Class 4A semistate in 2019.
The Knights return four starters including All-SIAC selections Jayden Scott and Izabell Grantz.
