Apr. 19—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown softball team opened its day with a 3-0 win over Bellevue University (Nebraska) on Saturday, April 19, at the Jimmies’ Lyle “Trapper” Lawrence Field.
The Jimmies’ Maddie Spaeth got the scoring started early when she hit a run scoring single inthe first to take a 1-0 lead. The Jimmies’ Lauren Weigel hit a double to score a run in the fifth and then she was brought home on a Kayla Quintanilla double to push the lead out to 3-0.
On the mound, the Jimmies’ Hope Ransome pitched a complete game shutout giving up four hits and striking out three Bruins hitters. The Bruins’ Katie Cunningham went six innings giving up three runs on five hits while striking out five hitters.

Jimmies lose in game two
The Jimmies could not find a breakthrough in a 5-0 loss to the Bruins in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Bruins (25-17, 10-6) were the one to get off to a fast start in this one when Bre McMurty hit a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. The Bruins added one more in the fifth on an RBI double before they put the game away in the seventh on another two-run shot this one from Kaitlyn Fisher to push the lead out to 5-0.
The Jimmies’ Abby Blair pitched 4.0 giving up three runs five hits while striking out three hitters. She was relieved by Maddie Hairgrove who pitched the final three innings giving up two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two. The Bruins’ Mariah Unverzagt pitched a complete game shutout while giving up seven hits, while striking out seven Jimmies and walking two hitters.
The Jimmies are back in action at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 25, when they host Dickinson State.
