Apr. 19—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown baseball team responded to a loss in the first game of the doubleheader with a convincing 15-5 win over Dickinson State University (North Dakota) on Saturday, April 19, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Blue Hawks (15-24, 7-7) got off to a fast start when Wyatt Wilharm hit a solo homer to right to push the Blue Hawks in front 1-0. After the Jimmies were retired in seven pitches in the first inning, they made the Blue Hawks’ Trent Richter work more in his final two innings, finishing the day with 55 pitches.

“I think it came down to just having more quality at-bats and stringing those at-bats together because we can string quality at-bats together, something’s gonna happen with our speed, our power,” Jimmies head coach Tom Hager said. “So it was fun to watch our guys to string those quality at-bats together.”

The Jimmies (30-12, 9-5) responded in the bottom of the second when Ben Patton hit a single to center to score a run and make it 1-0 before they worked a bases-loaded walk to take a 2-1 lead. The Jimmies’ Ryan Muizelaar added to the lead with a solo home run in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

The Blue Hawks continued to hit the ball out of the ballpark with this one coming from Luis Rodriguez in the fourth inning to tie the game up at three. The Jimmies punched right back in the bottom of the fourth with a nine-run frame off nine hits to take a 12-3 lead. The teams traded runs in the fifth inning to see the Jimmies go up 13-4. The teams continued to trade runs from there to give the Jimmies the ten-run win.

“I think it just came down to getting one guy on and then we got a guy on, we were able to move him over, we were able to get him in and then that recipe we kept doing for multiple innings at the end of the game,” Hager said.

The Jimmies’ Muizelaar went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs which was only outdone by his teammate Ben Patton who went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs.

“We were just more relaxed and having more fun,” Muizelaar said. “I know that sounds cliche but we were just having a good time and had simpler approaches. We weren’t thinking as much and got things going the second game.”

The two teams play in another doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 20.

Jimmies fall in game one

The Jimmies could not cash in with runners on base and it cost them in a 5-2 loss to Dickinson State University (North Dakota) in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 19, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Jimmies stranded 11 men on base and went 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Conversely, the Blue Hawks left seven players on base.

“It was extremely frustrating to strand those runners because we have really good hitters,” Hager said. “But …, I tip my cap to their pitcher. He made big pitches when he needed to and we just couldn’t get anything to fall.”

The Jimmies’ Ryan Muizelaar opened the scoring in the first with a two-run shot to left to give his team a 2-0 lead. The home run was his 12th of the season.

The Blue Hawks brought it to within one in the third when Cameron Erickson hit a solo shot over the wall in right. The score stayed that way until the Blue Hawks were down to their final two outs but they did not care with Luis Rodriguez hitting a solo shot over the wall in left field to tie the game up at two.

The Blue Hawks took the lead in the top of the ninth when Jadyn Roberts hit a three-run homer to right to give his team a 5-2 lead.

After giving up the home run to Muizelaar, the Blue Hawks’ Jacob Scully did not give up any runs over the rest of his day, going 7.0 innings giving up, two runs on seven hits while striking out seven hitters and walking two hitters. He was relieved by Trent Chavez who pitched the final two innings of the game only giving up one hit while striking out four hitters.
