Apr. 20—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown carried a quick start to a 12-1 win over Dickinson State University (North Dakota) in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday, April 20, at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Jimmies got off to a fast start thanks to three bunts forcing the Blue Hawks pitcher Tate Williams into two errors to score three runs and give the Jimmies a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

“I think it was more about trying to get runs on the board early on and when one of them worked we went back to it,” Jimmies head coach Tom Hager said. “We have a lot of guys that can bunt. When you bunt, you’re able to get on base, you’re able to move runners over and you can score. We do a good job of it and in that game we were able to do it in consecutive at-bats and it worked for us.”

The Jimmies added five more in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead. The Blue Hawks got one back in the top of the third on a single and an error to bring it closer at 8-1. The Jimmies could not be slowed down, though as in the bottom of the third they started the scoring with an Alex Alva single to make it 9-1, and that kickstarted a four-run frame to go up 12-1.

On the bump, the Jimmies’ Ryan Radkey went four innings giving up one unearned run on four hits while striking out six and walking one hitter. After him, the Jimmies turned to Elias Harris and Grayson Sargent who pitched the last three innings shutting the Hawks out while giving up one hit and striking out two hitters and walking one.

The Blue Hawks starter was Williams who went 2.1 giving up nine earned runs on 11 hits while walking three and striking out one. He was relieved by Rogelio Gonzalez who pitched 3.2 shutout innings giving up two hits while striking out two and walking two hitters.

The Jimmies turned the tables on the Blue Hawks in the second game of the doubleheader by getting a 5-4 walk-off win to end their 2024-25 home campaign.

The Blue Hawks opened the scoring in the second game when Luis Gonzalez hits a single off the base of the wall in right to score a run and make it 1-0. The Blue Hawks were able to get more breathing room in the third when they hit two doubles to score three and push the lead out to 4-0.

“I think they just capitalized on some mistakes that we made but again (Austin) Shelton was able to minimize the damage, (Kai) Mayfield threw really well and (Ben) Bohlmann closed the door,” Hager said. “So give them credit for hitting early on but I felt like our staff was outstanding in game two. When we were able to pass the baton on to each guy, they all did their job.”

The Jimmies offense was kept silent with 14 consecutive hitters being retired before Alex Alva reached on an error to lead off the seventh and that allowed the Jimmies offense to figure it out. The Jimmies kept pushing and broke through on a groundout before the biggest swing of the game came from Landon Runge when he hit a single up the middle to score two runs and tie the game up at four.

“In the game of baseball you gotta wait for something to go your way and as soon as they left the door open we knew we were going to take advantage of it,” Alva said.

The Jimmies got their bats moving in the ninth inning and loaded the bases for Alva who quickly went down 0-2 in the count but responded to smack a single through the right side to score the run and give the Jimmies the comeback win.

“Just put the ball in play, hit the ball hard, get a pitch that I can hit. I didn’t want to chase up high because that guy throws a good fastball, so just looking for something I could drive,” Alva said. ” … I saw a fastball, they were working me in, just knew I had to get the foot down be ready for it and do my job.”

The Jimmies are back in action at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 25, when they go to Bellevue University.
