With the New York Yankees starting Tuesday night’s game with four straight home runs, there was little that could dampen the mood in the dugout. That was until Jazz Chisholm, Jr. left the game in obvious discomfort.
The Yankees’ second baseman left the game with “right flank discomfort,” YES Network announcer Michael Kay reported.
During his first-inning at-bat against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night, Chisholm appeared to tweak his side mid-swing. Yankees manager and the team’s ran out to check on him and there was a discussion that went over a minute as he tried to stretch his side.
Despite the discomfort, he remained in the game and proceeded to hit a double down the right-field line. He reached third on an error and when he slid in, third base coach Luis Rojas immediately signaled for a trainer.
Oswald Peraza replaced him as a pinch-runner.
Chisholm’s early exit is particularly concerning given his recent struggles at the plate.
Chisholm’s performance has cooled considerably after a scorching start that included multiple home runs in the opening week. Through 29 games, he’s batting .173 with seven home runs, 17 RBIs, and six stolen bases, resulting in a .692 OPS . While his power remains evident, his contact rate has declined, and he’s struggled to maintain consistency at the plate.
The hard-hit double, off Oriole right-hander Kyle Gibson, who was making his season debut, could have been a turning point for Chisholm.
That, however, will have to wait now.
The priority is to get and keep Chisholm healthy and on the field.
