What to Know
We’ve got another exciting SEC matchup on schedule as the Miss. State Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores are set to tip at 9:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Memorial Gym. Each of these teams will be battling to keep a seven-game winning streak alive.
On Saturday, Miss. State blew past S. Carolina, posting an 85-50 win. The Bulldogs have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won seven games by 21 points or more this season.
Miss. State’s victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Josh Hubbard, who went 7 for 13 en route to 21 points. Hubbard is trending in the right direction considering he’s improved his point production for three straight games. KeShawn Murphy was another key player, going 6 for 8 en route to 12 points plus eight rebounds and four blocks.
Miss. State was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as S. Carolina only posted ten.
Vanderbilt’s season wasn’t pretty last year but it’s starting to look like struggles are in the rearview. They walked away with an 80-72 win over LSU on Saturday.
Vanderbilt’s win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from MJ Collins, who went 5 for 6 en route to 14 points plus two steals. Collins had some trouble finding his footing against New Orleans on Monday, so this was a nice turnaround. Another player making a difference was Jaylen Carey, who had 14 points along with eight rebounds and two steals.
Miss. State pushed their record up to 13-1 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. As for Vanderbilt, their win bumped their record up to an identical 13-1.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Miss. State has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 39.5 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Vanderbilt struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 37. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.
Miss. State was able to grind out a solid victory over Vanderbilt in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, winning 68-55. The rematch might be a little tougher for Miss. State since the squad won’t have the home-court advantage this time around. We’ll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
