Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez is one of the most complete players in MLB. Entering Friday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, Ramirez was looking to build on what was a historic performance on Thursday.

In Cleveland’s walk-off win against the Minnesota Twins, Ramirez became the first primary third baseman in MLB history to reach 250 home runs and 250 stolen bases (via MLB’s Sarah Langs). His 10th inning steal led to the game’s winning run.

Legging out an infield single in the third inning of Friday’s series opener against Toronto, Ramirez collapsed behind first base and was forced to leave the game with Cleveland’s trainer.

An ironman for most of his career, Ramirez has played at least 150 games in each of the last four seasons. Any time he leaves a game early, there is obvious concern. Fortunately for Guardians fans, the team’s update is encouraging one.

“Jose Ramirez has a mild right ankle sprain,” Guardians team reporter Andre Knott announced on X.

The team reposted this official update and also mentioned it on the broadcast.

Ramirez entered Friday producing below his usual numbers. The switch-hitting third baseman owns a .774 OPS after going 2-for-2 in the series opener against Toronto. For his career, Ramirez owns an .855 OPS that ranks 16th among active hitters and first among active switch-hitters.

The Guardians entered Friday second in the American League Central division, trailing the Detroit Tigers by 1.5 games. Cleveland eliminated Detroit in the 2024 ALDS, surviving to win a five-game series.

Ramirez’s health is pivotal to Cleveland’s pursuit of another division title, and it fortunately sounds as if he has avoided a serious injury.
