We all know Ohio State is a so-called “football school.” There’s no denying that. If it weren’t so, there wouldn’t be so much tolerance of what’s happened in basketball and other sports over the last few years. The mediocrity we’ve seen with some of the sports, and most certainly with hoops, wouldn’t be tolerated on the gridiron.
So yeah, when you look at baseball, that too doesn’t get too much in the way of notoriety. Sure, OSU has won quite a few Big Ten titles over the years, and Chad Swisher put the program on the map in a modest fashion, but when it comes to Major League Baseball, there’s not a whole lot of Scarlet and Gray in some of the players wardrobes.
With this week being the start of the MLB season, we thought it’d be a great time to look at how many former Buckeyes are on active rosters at the game’s highest level, and you can probably guess there aren’t that many. In fact, there are only three former Ohio State players who were on starting day rosters on the 30 MLB rosters. Here’s a look at all three.
Former Ohio State player on MLB opening day rosters
Dillon Dingler, Detroit Tigers– Catcher
Dingler made his MLB debut last season but was drafted in the second round of the 2020 MLB draft. He is currently the backup to starting catcher Jake Rogers but does have six at bats already this season. If he continues to perform with professional at bats and handles the pitching staff well, he could carve out a pretty good career still.
Zach Denzenzo, Houston Astros – Fist Baseman
Denzenzo graduated from Ohio State in 2022 and was drafted by the Astros in the 12th round of the MLB draft. It didn’t take him long to make it to the majors after he was added to the 40-man active roster on August 6 of last season. He has performed above expectations thus far and is currently a depth piece for the Astros at first base. If he keeps impressing, he too could find his way into the starting lineup.
Ryan Feltner, Colorado Rockies – Right-Handed Pitcher
Feltner was drafted back in 2015 by the Toronto Blue Jays but decided to play college ball at Ohio State instead. Following his collegiate career in Columbus, he was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB draft. He made his Major League Debut on September 5, 2021. He made a start against the Tampa Bay Rays on March 30 and is a part of the Rockies’ starting rotation. We should see a lot of him this season.
