Bucky McMillan and his staff at Texas A&M have started their tenure in College Station with a bang. Hired as head coach on April 4, McMillan is wasting no time making waves in the NCAA transfer portal.
McMillan takes over for Buzz Williams, who went 23-11 last season and led the Aggies to four straight seasons with 21 or more wins. However, Texas A&M has fallen in the second round of the NCAA Tournament each of the past two years. Williams has since left for the head coaching job at Maryland, which led to McMillan’s hiring.
After picking up 99 wins in five seasons at Samford, McMillan now steps into the spotlight as an SEC head coach. He knows full well what it takes to compete in a conference that’s sending a growing number of teams to March Madness.
The latest win for the Aggies came Friday when former Alabama and Kansas guard Rylan Griffen made it official — he’s headed to College Station for the 2025-26 season. Griffen, a four-star recruit, is expected to bring immediate value.

Griffen spent two seasons at Alabama, playing in 73 games. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.2 points per game. The 6-foot-6 guard then transferred to Kansas to play under Bill Self, where he started 20 of 33 games and averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
Griffen joins Zach Clemence, also transferring from Kansas, who will suit up for the Aggies next season.
Before Griffen and Clemence, the Aggies had already brought in four players via the portal. The most recent addition was Marcus Hill out of NC State, who will have one season of eligibility remaining.
The others include Mackenzie Mgbako from Indiana, Jacari Lane from North Alabama and Josh Holloway, who played under McMillan at Samford.
Texas A&M is building quickly, and with McMillan steering the ship, the portal action doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.
