The first three years of Billy Napier’s tenure as the head coach of the Florida football program were spent cleaning up the mess left behind by the previous staff, with glimpses of promise finally appearing in the second half of the 2024 campaign.
After that strong finish, plus some additions through the transfer portal as well as a recuperated DJ Lagway, the Gators appear to be poised for a big season this coming fall. Of course, they will once again face one of the hardest schedules in the sport and play in the über-competetive Southeastern Conference, but things still have an encouraging look in Gainesville.
Most of the early college football rankings have the Orange and Blue among the top 25 teams in the nation, but one particular one is much more bullish than the others. That would be Brandon Marcello of CBS Sports and his post-spring college football rankings, in which he places Napier and Co. at No. 10 — just behind the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide and ahead of the Miami Hurricanes at No. 11.
“Billy Napier avoided the coaching carousel last season, winning eight games against arguably the toughest schedule in college football. His team should be better this fall. DJ Lagway could emerge as the SEC’s best quarterback if he remains healthy behind four returning starters on the offensive line,” Marcello offers.
“Does he have the receivers to help him along the way? More importantly, does the defense have enough depth to contend weekly in the SEC?”
Those answers will come sooner than you think.
