The fan who fell from a high grandstand onto the field during a recent Pittsburgh Pirates game has a broken neck and back, the organizer of his GoFundMe page wrote Monday.
Kavan Markwood, a 20-year-old former high school and college athlete from the area, plummeted over a rail at PNC Park last Wednesday when the Pirates hosted the Chicago Cubs. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he has remained since.
In a promising update, organizer Jennifer Phillips wrote: “Kav took his first steps today! It’s a slow slow process, but seeing him up and moving was a huge win and definitely lifted everyone’s spirits.”
“He still has a long way to go—he’s dealing with a broken neck, clavicle, and back so there are plenty of obstacles ahead,” she continued. “But he’s showing real strength, and we’re staying hopeful for a smooth recovery.”
Authorities wrote on X last week that the “incident is being treated as accidental in nature.”
In a previous post, Phillips called Markwood’s progress at Allegheny General Hospital “nothing short of miraculous” in reporting that he was awake and alert.
Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School outside of Pittsburgh, where he was the MVP of the football team. The linebacker played at Wheeling University in 2023, appearing in five games.
