Yann Sommer proved that he is still “fundamental” for Inter Milan in yesterday evening’s Serie A win over Cagliari.
Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, hailed the 36-year-old for one fine first half save in particular.
Inter Milan have relied on goalkeeper Yann Sommer quite a bit over the last few matches.
Particularly in Serie A, the former Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munich keeper has had a decisive influence.
Sommer had made a couple massive saves in the second half against Udinese. These were absolutely crucial to Inter seeing out their 2-1 win.
Then, the Swiss had also made a couple big saves in the first half against Parma last weekend. These were certainly big moments, and made sure it was nothing worse than a draw for Inter.
Yann Sommer Still “Fundamental” For Inter Milan Vs Cagliari
And it was more of the same for Yann Sommer against Cagliari yesterday.
As is usually the case, the veteran keeper didn’t have all that much to do in Inter’s goal.
But that is precisely the challenge for Sommer. He must stay switched-on to produce goalkeeping heroics in those moments when Inter’s defense does break down and allow a big chance.
That is exactly what happened in the first half. Cagliari striker Roberto Piccoli was running through one-on-one with Yann Sommer.
But the Inter keeper stayed big and won that duel with Piccoli.
It was exactly the kind of moment Inter know that they’ll need throughout the run-in of the season.
