WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue football’s new coaching staff recognized Ethan Trent’s leadership skills within their first few weeks on campus.

On Thursday, the Boilermaker coaches rewarded those contributions. Trent, a Carmel native who spent his first two years with the program as a walk-on, was awarded a scholarship at the end of the 13th spring practice.

Trent is the younger brother of the late Tyler Trent, who became a national figure for his Boilermaker fandom and as an advocate for cancer patients. The student gate at Ross-Ade Stadium was named in his honor.

Purdue coach Barry Odom began the presentation by saying he was about to do something “I’ve never done” in his years as a head coach. In consideration of his work ethic and competitive spirit, he asked Trent to stand and told him he was now on scholarship.

Those words brought a big smile to Trent’s face and triggered a swarm from his cheering teammates.

“Earned it every single day,” Odom said in the social media video posted by the team. “I’m proud of him.”

Trent has played center and guard with the first- and second-string offensive lines this spring. Director of strength and conditioning Kiero Small identified Trent as one of the team’s best performers during winter workouts.

Trent appeared in three game last season as a redshirt freshman. He’s currently competing to solidify what will be an almost completely remade offensive line two-deep.

Purdue holds another practice Friday and concludes with Saturday’s Spring Showcase at Ross-Ade. The practice begins at noon and is free and open to the public.
